Join us this Thursday April 15th, as David Gimbly from the Ann Arbor Apple Store shows us Apple’s new iPad. You’ve got to touch it to believe it! So be there, touch it and believe it! David is a skilled presenter and has done many presentations for Ann Arbor’s MacTechnics Apple user group. Aside from that, I played with an iPad this past weekend and it is indeed amazing. No ad on TV or the web really does it justice. Once you touch it, you’ll understand.

This will be our second Mac Basics SIG (Special Interest Group). If you feel like all our meetings are above your head, come at 6:00 to room 165 (our meeting room last semester) where you can learn about basic features on the Mac. A few months of that might make you feel a little more up to speed.

Our main meeting will be held in room 169 of the Arts & Sciences (A&S) building at Lansing Community College. It’s on the first floor in the northeast corner of the building.

6:00 Come early to room 169 and take advantage of our MacGurus, where paid up members can get one-on-one help for a few minutes with knowledgeable members of our group. Your turn will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

6:30 Q & A – This is our regular session open to everybody.

Join us Thursday March 18th as Mac Guru Gerry Felipe shows us how to convert those old (decaying) VHS (and Beta) tapes to digital.

It is with great sorrow and shock that I write to tell you about the death of Ed Noonan, one of the founding members and former long-time president of LAMALUG. On February 19, Ed went into the hospital to have a shoulder replacement. As I understand it (without having all the details), after coming out of recovery and going back to his room, he had a heart attach and died.

Ed was a huge supporter of Apple products and his franchise in Alaska sold so many machines that he was invited to Apple headquarters and given an award by Steve Jobs himself. He continued to have the ear of people high up in the product development chain. At our weekly lunch he would tell us about suggestions he was making and we would see products emerge a few years later based on his ideas.

Ed was also a gifted attorney whose memory for minute details in complicated cases made him in great demand to handle multimillion dollar lawsuits by large corporations. If all that weren’t enough, he was an avid bicyclist and member of the Tri-County Bicycle Association. He rode his bike from the tip of Florida to the furthest point in Alaska and posted daily updates about his trip on his website. This was ten years ago when the internet wasn’t quite what it is today. He had just completed a book about the journey, which was nearing publication.

There are so many amazing stories I learned about Ed over the years, it’s impossible to even list them here. Suffice it to say that I will miss him greatly.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

MEETING
Join us this Thursday as President John Fauver presents “So You Need A New Mac. . .” Considerations on why you need to upgrade, & things to think about before you buy. With tantalizing rumors about an Apple tablet all around us, this might be some particularly valuable information to help keep you from being swept up in an emotional purchase.

MACGURUs
Take advantage of our MacGurus, where paid up members can get one-on-one help for a few minutes with knowledgeable members of our group. MacGurus starts at 6:00. Your turn will be on a first-come, first-served basis, so get there early. Organize your question because if others are waiting, we will limit your session to 10 minutes. (You may be able to arrange an outside meeting if you need more time.) MacGurus is limited to a half hour total (three 10-minutes sessions) since we don’t want our gurus to miss the main meeting. And besides, we need them to answer questions during the Q & A!
