On Thursday, August 19th, 2010, LAMALUG will be discussing what can be done with all those new pictures you just took over the summer. Our focus will be on iPhoto ’09 and what it can do. iPhoto ’09 is part of Apple’s iLife ’09 suite. Join us at our new location in the MSU Communication Arts Building on the MSU campus. (See the previous post below for directions!) John Fauver will be leading the discussion.

Agenda:

The “Ask a Geek” session will begin at 6:00 PM where members can have a question answered by our resident geeks.

Due to the new location, there will not be a Mac-Basics Special Interest Group meeting this month.

At 6:30 PM the main meeting will begin with a general question-and-answer session, followed at 7:00 PM by the iPhoto presentation.

There will be a raffle at the end of the meeting, so be sure to stick around to see what the prizes are!

An “afterglow” will be held at a local eatery close to the meeting location immediately following the meeting.

Next Month – DEMO FAIR 2010

Sign up now to demonstrate something to the group at our first annual Demo Fair. This is your chance to present to all your friends in the group one of your own favorite programs or how you do something that others may not know. You will be given only five short minutes to present the demonstration, and another five minutes for questions. (During the Q&A the next presenter will start getting ready.) It doesn’t have to be world-shattering, just something you would like to share with the group. Just click this link (which will be here very shortly) to sign up for the Demo Fair.

Our new location is in room 161 Communication Arts Building on the Michigan State University Campus. Here is a quick map

For those of you who were not able to brave the thunderstorms for our July Picnic, we announced that LAMALUG will now be meeting on the Michigan State University Campus, in the Communication Arts Building.

Comm-Arts is where WKAR has it’s studios, and there is a parking ramp just behind the building, and has a bus terminal on the street side. If you plan to arrive before 6:00 PM, be aware that the ramp is directly across from the MSU Public Safety office, and visitors need to park at the meters in the ramp before 6:00 PM. After 6:00 PM the ramp is open to the public. As you enter the ramp, the Comm-Arts Building is to your left, and there are stairs and an elevator between the levels. There is a sidewalk from the corner of the ramp into the reception area for WKAR, and you will see signs directing you to our new home from there.

Directions:

From East of Campus (East Lansing, Okemos, Haslett, Williamston, etc.), get to Mt. Hope road from either Okemos Road or Hagadorn, and take Mt. Hope West to Farm Lane. Turn Right (North) on Farm Lane and go under the two new railroad bridges. Do not turn at the first traffic light between the bridges (Service Road). At the second light, turn left at Trowbridge, and follow it around the bends to the parking ramp.

From West of Campus (anywhere west of US-127), take Harrison to Trowbridge, and turn onto campus (or get off US-127 at the Trowbridge Exit and continue Straight). Follow Trowbridge on campus until you reach the parking ramp.

There will be signs posted on the side of the roads leading on campus to guide you to the right Parking Ramp, and there will be signs in the building once you get to Communication Arts.

The Ramp is called “Ramp 5″ in this map (http://bit.ly/LAMALUG-Meetings)

On July 15th, 6:30 PM, this month’s LAMALUG meeting will be a picnic in Francis Park instead of a regular meeting.

The Board of Directors is providing the main dish (hamburgers, hot dogs, buns and fixings), but you need to bring a dish to share. To make it easy to know who is bringing what, we have a sign up form at PBWorks.

All you have to do is sign up for a free PBWorks account, and then
select the “Edit” tab on our page. Then add your name and
what you are bringing to share to the list.

As a special treat, for all active members, we will be holding a
raffle for a copy of ProSoft Engineering’s Data Backup 3 program for the Mac.

To get to Francis park, you can see the map here.

In August, the main presentation will show you what to do with
those great photos you took over the summer using iLife 09. iPhoto is
wonderful and allows you to organize and edit your photos, create
photo books, calendars, and more.

In September, LAMALUG will have a DEMO FAIR for
our main meeting. This will be your chance to show us one thing about
an application, a shortcut, or something you do on your Mac that you
want to share with the rest of the group. Each demonstration should be
about five minutes long, with another five minutes for questions from
the audience. More information about the Demo Fair will be coming
soon, and the sign up form will be on the PBWorks page at the
beginning of August.

On Thursday, June 17th, LAMALUG will present a program on DATA BACKUP at our regular meeting location at Lansing Community College in downtown Lansing, Michigan.

Our resident Apple Gurus will be available for members in the main meeting room, Arts and Sciences (A&S) Building Room 007 in the basement starting at 6:15 PM. Also at 6:15 PM, the MacBasics Special Interest Group (SIG) will meet just down the hall in room 165. The topic for the MacBasics SIG will be “Practicing Safe Browsing.”

“Practicing Safe Browsing” will cover using Safari and other common Web Browsers (such as Firefox and Opera). We will go over the common preference settings and what they mean, and cover the basics of conducting safe financial transactions online.

Our main meeting will begin with a brief general question and answer session at 7:00 PM, and the feature presentation on Data Backup will start at 7:30 PM by explaining why backing up your data is vital. We will go over the fundamentals of how backing up data is done, and cover some of the common terms used. Our expert team of presenters will show you how to set up and start backing up using a number of applications. We will feature Mike Bombich’s CarbonCopyCloner, Shirt Pocket’s SuperDuper, Apple’s Backup.app (part of a Mobile Me account) and TimeMachine (part of OS-X 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard) , and ProSoft Engineering’s Data Backup 3.

For current members, we will be raffling off a copy of both Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper at the end of the meeting. (They will be .dmg files on brand new 4GB flash drives!)

Be sure to come to our July non-meeting: Our member’s raffle in July will be a copy of ProSoft Engineering’s Data Backup 3 for Mac. We’re having a picnic in Francis Park in Lansing in July. Burgers and hot dogs will be provided, but we are ask that everyone bring something to share. You can sign up on our PBWorks Wiki page to let everyone know what you’re bringing. (You will need to create a free account, in order to edit the page. This is new to all of us, so please be patient as we work out the bugs!)

In August, the main presentation on iPhoto will show you what to do with those great photos you took over the summer.

In September, LAMALUG will have a different feel to the main meeting. We will have a “Demo Fair” put on by you, the members. Sign up to tell us just one thing about something you do on your Mac. You will have 5 minutes to demonstrate your application or trick, and then 5 minutes to answer questions. In order to make room for as many members as possible, we will begin the main meeting promptly at 7:00 PM. The sign-up form will be available on our PBWorks page soon.

See you there!

Join us this Thursday as LAMALUG vice-president, Jonathan Stars, demonstrates how to connect to local and remote computers so you can share data and help each other solve computer problems. Even though he’ll use Timbuktu software for the demo, Jon will discuss a number of other ways to get connected. We’ll also cover the drop box and how to share with other computers on your local network. Just understanding how this concept works can open up a whole new world of possibilities for you.

This will be our third Mac Basics SIG (Special Interest Group). If you feel like all our meetings are above your head, come at 6:00 to room 165 (our meeting room last semester) where you can learn about basic features on the Mac. A few months of that might make you feel a little more up to speed.

Our main meeting will be held in room 169 of the Arts & Sciences (A&S) building at Lansing Community College. It’s on the first floor in the northeast corner of the building.

6:00 Come early to room 169 and take advantage of our MacGurus, where paid up members can get one-on-one help for a few minutes with knowledgeable members of our group. Your turn will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

6:30 Q & A – This is our regular session open to everybody.

RAFFLE -
You must be a paid up member to pick up your free ticket at the door. Just one more reason to become a member.
